Electrical services

Applies to all quotations, estimates and work provided by HJ Electrical.

01Definitions

We / us
HJ Electrical (Harvey-James Electrical, sole trader).
You / client
The individual or organisation requesting our services.
Works
Any installation, inspection, testing, fault finding, maintenance, repair or related service we agree to carry out.
Subcontractor
A suitably qualified, competent person we engage to help deliver the works.

02Quotations & pricing

  • Quotations are valid for 30 days unless stated otherwise and become fixed once accepted.
  • A quotation covers only the scope of work described in it. Anything outside that scope will be quoted separately.
  • If you change the scope after acceptance, or we discover something that affects cost, materials or programme, we'll explain it and agree the change with you before doing the extra work. No work that creates extra cost goes ahead without your approval.
  • Where testing or inspection is needed before work can safely proceed, the quotation remains subject to those results.
  • Remedial work for pre-existing defects is not included unless the quotation says so.
  • Guide prices and estimates are for budgeting only and are not fixed quotations until confirmed in writing.
  • Where we supply materials, prices may include a reasonable procurement and handling charge.
  • Emergency, evening, weekend and out-of-hours visits may carry an extra call-out charge, always confirmed before booking.

03Payment & deposits

  • Small jobs (up to £300) are payable on completion unless agreed otherwise.
  • Larger projects may need a deposit before work is scheduled, plus staged payments. Amounts and schedules are shown on your quotation or invoice before work begins.
  • Work may be paused until agreed staged payments are received.
  • Certification may be withheld until the agreed balance is settled, where legally permitted.
Deposits secure your booking, reserve time in our diary and, where applicable, pay for materials, so they are generally non-refundable once those commitments are made. We understand circumstances change and will always try to be fair. Materials ordered specifically for your project, including custom-made items, may also be non-refundable.

04Access, safety & scheduling

You agree to provide safe, reasonable access to the property at the agreed time. We may postpone or refuse work where conditions are unsafe, including:

  • exposed asbestos or significant water ingress
  • dangerous structural conditions
  • rodent infestations or signs of active rodent activity
  • aggressive behaviour, or any other hazard posing an unacceptable risk

Normal household pets are fine, though we may ask for them to be kept away from the work area.

Electrical work can involve lifting floors, chasing walls, drilling and opening concealed areas. Unless the quotation says otherwise, making good, decorating, plastering, tiling and specialist finishes are excluded.

We make every effort to attend as arranged. If unforeseen circumstances mean rescheduling, we'll tell you as soon as we can. Restricted access, other trades, third-party delays or late design changes may also move completion dates.

05Existing installations

Many properties have defects that aren't visible until inspection, testing or dismantling begins. We can't accept responsibility for defects or non-compliances that existed before our work.

If we find any, we'll explain what we've found, talk through your options and provide a quotation before any additional remedial work. In some cases we may be unable to continue, or to energise an installation, until dangerous defects are rectified.

06Certification & compliance

All work follows the current edition of BS 7671 (Wiring Regulations) and Building Regulations Part P where applicable.

Where applicable we provide the relevant certification: Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC), Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificates (MEIWC) and Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR). Certificates are issued on completion, once any outstanding balance for the works is settled.

07Workmanship guarantee

Unless agreed otherwise in writing, our installation workmanship carries a minimum 12-month guarantee against defects arising directly from our work.

  • It does not cover accidental damage, misuse, alterations by others, normal wear and tear, or existing installations outside our scope.
  • It applies only to work carried out by HJ Electrical. Products and materials remain covered by the manufacturer's own warranty and terms.

08Subcontractors

Where appropriate we may use suitably qualified subcontractors. They are expected to meet our standards of workmanship, professionalism and safety.

09Photography & filming

We may photograph or film our work for records, quality assurance, safety compliance and marketing. We avoid capturing faces, belongings, documents or identifying details wherever reasonably possible.

If you'd rather your project isn't used for marketing, tell us before or during the works and we'll respect that. You can withdraw consent at any time; we'll stop using your content in future marketing where reasonably possible, though this won't affect material already published with your permission.

10Complaints

If you're unhappy with any aspect of our work, please tell us as soon as possible. We aim to resolve concerns fairly, professionally and without unnecessary delay.
